I had great plans for today: meet my friend Debbie for a 10-mile run, do a one-hour bike ride, clean the house, hold a volunteer meeting, grocery shop, and relax a bit.
My body had other ideas. After spending two days in New York City for back to back meetings, I came home last night and crashed — I was in bed before 9:30 pm. The next thing I know, it’s 8:45 in the morning, my head hurts, and a run is the farthest thing from my mind. I texted Debbie to let her know I wasn’t going to make it, and went back to sleep in hopes the headache would go away on its own.
An hour later I’m up, headache and all, my mind trying to figure out how to make things work. With two rest days due to work, how could I possibly take a third? I had a volunteer meeting at 2 pm — maybe I could squeeze a bike ride in before, and do my run after? Or my run after dinner? Caffeine and breakfast first.
So, hubby made breakfast sandwiches while my son helped me clean the kitchenette area where the volunteer meeting would be held. The house was in worse shape than I thought, but we made good progress.
After breakfast, I decided to take my son to Kohls. He needed shorts for summer, and I was eager to check out their new superhero fitness collection. Plus, we desperately needed some mom-son time. He made out like a bandit, and I found some new dress shoes and a couple pieces from the Her Universe collection (the selection was limited in the store, but I will be shopping online with my Kohls Cash for more!)
After the volunteer meeting, I still didn’t feel like working out (the rainy, cold weather didn’t help), so I decided to take my son to get a new bicycle. This was another item on my to-do list, and I wasn’t sure when I’d have another opportunity. We once again had success, trading in his old bike for a new adult one.
A grocery trip (more quality time with my son), homemade dinner, and some serious laps around the house to finish my daily steps later, I decided to call it a day.
While I’m not thrilled I took another rest day, I did get a lot accomplished and for once listed to my body. Most importantly, I was able to spend some serious quality time with my son.
When was the last time you took an unplanned rest day? How did you handle it?
